About
SHSU Band is a concert band made up of friendly and enthusiastic musicians who play various styles of music, such as film soundtracks, musical theatre and other popular music, some classical and Jazz plus Christmas tunes when the winter comes around. We are a non-auditioned group and welcome anyone who plays an instrument, be it woodwind, brass, strings or percussion! It doesn’t matter what experience you have playing – whether you play very regularly or you haven’t played for years, we accommodate a range of different abilities.
Throughout the year we have frequent socials which include music-related activities, such as going to the pantomime. Non-music related socials may include other fun activities, such as laser quest, meals out and film nights.
And of course, we do enjoy performing! We have a regular slot at the Kelham Island Christmas Market, play at various university events and have an end of year concert to raise money for our chosen charity. In March 2018, we hosted the first Band Varsity, with a friendly competition against the University of Sheffield's Music Players' Society Concert Band. This has now become an annual event and is something we look forward to each year!
Our conductor, Jamie Hollings, has now been with us for a number of years and is always there to support musicians in the Band.
Once a year we hold our take on varsity, a Battle of the Bands event with MPS at The University of Sheffield. We have taken home the trophy 3 years in a row!
