About Reclaim the Night
The Reclaim the Night movement began in the UK in the 1970s, inspired by women in Leeds who organised marches after a series of murders by the Yorkshire Ripper. At the time, women were told to stay indoors at night for their own safety, while men carried on life as usual. The marches flipped that narrative: instead of women being blamed or restricted, protesters demanded that the streets be made safe and that male violence be challenged.
Today, Reclaim the Night continues across the UK as a protest against sexual violence, street harassment, and victim-blaming. It's a reminder that safety at night is not a privilege, but a right.
